Achieving success at work and home

"Have you ever noticed that in one part of your life it is easy to succeed and then in other parts it feels a lot harder to achieve your goals?

If so then you are not alone. The motivation to get things done could be lacking, maybe you find procrastination creeps in or just there isn't enough hours in the day and "those" things will just have to wait. In the short term we all have to balance the urgent, important and nice-to-do tasks, but for many there is a point where enough is enough.

When you find yourself in this position you have several options available to you. You can identify your true motivators, these are the things that are really at the heart of your desires not just the surface level nice to have drivers. Identifying these can sometimes be really tricky and you might not even be consciously aware of them, until you have stripped away some layers of resistance or procrastination.

For example, many people want to earn more, but why? If they had more money what would they do that would make them happier or help them achieve their goals. The real goal then, in this example, is not to earn more money but maybe to be able to travel, or spend more time doing something else you love. Finding these motivators are the ones that are truly going to help you focus on what you want to achieve and sticking at it.

On the other hand, other people get diverted from their goals, through identifying things that have to happen first, reasons why other things can't happen, either now or for can't happen for them. Lots of reasons may fuel this, for example fear of failure, not really being committed to the task in hand or being overwhelmed by the amount of work that needs to be done. More can be read about procrastination in my earlier blogs.

One of the best ways you can help overcome these obstacles is to look at how you achieve success in other areas of your life and look at how you can transfer these practised behaviours of success into the areas where you are still looking to achieve your goals. For example if you find organisation and planning key to success then how can you redirect these skills to your new goals. If you find you are most successful when you are not over-thinking the situation, then challenge yourself to experiment if this is this something that would work in other areas of your life where goals are waiting to be achieved.

One tool some clients like to use to make sure they are allocating sufficient time and energy to the important areas and goals in their lives is a "wheel of life". A nice example of this tool is at www.mindtools.com/pages/article/newHTE_93.htm

Often people will focus on the areas of their life that are going well or they find easier, but then do not have sufficient time or energy to concentrate on goals they have in other areas. Work-life balance can be whatever you want it to be, as long as you allocate sufficient time to achieve what you want in those areas and your goals are realistic and achievable.

Performance, efficiency and achievement long term is about getting the balance right. A marathon runner or professional athlete will not focus training just on their physical times or improving the one thing they are already good at, but include work for endurance, stamina, nutrition, mental plans of action, positive mindsets and confidence. Their friends, family, colleagues and life events will all have an impact on this. When you think about achieving your goals it is unlikely to be a thing that happens or occurs in isolation to the environment around you, so a really good starting point is to look at goals one at a time and see how you can start getting all the areas of your life to start working towards supporting your success.

A final top tip when starting to look at how to achieve your goals is to keep focused on what you do want rather than what you don't want. The mind is programmed to respond to the thing you focus on. For example by saying "I don't want to eat chocolate on week days" you now have had chocolate and weekdays register in your head. You can see how this works against you when dieting! So what you need to do is start to recognise when you are thinking in a negative way and purposefully re-frame it to what you do want "I want to feel smug about choosing an apple for a snack during the week when I next go to diet club". -Which for me, is later today by the way.

There are lots more things that can be done to help you achieve your goals, but the most important thing is that, however you chose to pursue your goals they are right and appropriate for you. If they are not realised by you, then long term you are not going to be motivated enough to do them. Whether you use a coach to help reveal the layers with you or do self help via tools like the one above I hope this helps give you some ideas of where you can start to make those changes and get the success you deserve".
