Nature or nurture? The role of confidence in success

In the past the argument for nurturing the development of confidence in childhood and therefore later into adulthood, has been strong. Now, there is further evidence that nature is at as important. With confidence being something we could inherit, like IQ. However, that does not mean that nurturing influences can not help us enhance what we have.

Large scale studies have found that while children with high IQs do well at school, it is not always the case. Furthermore, children who have high self confidence but not as high IQ, can do equally as well at school as those who do have high IQ.

This pattern of self confidence affecting successful performance and ability is also seen in sports. Supported by tops athletes looking to sports psychologists and hypnotherapists to help visual positive outcomes and success.

For more information on the study a link can be found from Psychology Today http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/wired-success/200907/self-confidence-nature-or-nurture
